Good Friday

On Good Friday, Catholics turn to the Veneration of the Cross to try to understand Christ's sacrifice for our redemption. The practice began in the fourth century in Jerusalem when St. Helen, the mother of Roman emperor Constantine, discovered a fragment of wood believed to the Lord's Holy Cross. The relic was venerated every year on Good Friday. The Church in Rome adopted the practice in the seventh century. Today we kneel before the crucifix and kiss it to pay the highest honor to the Holy Cross as the means of our salvation.

Easter Sunday, 9:30: This is the celebration of Jesus' resurrection on the third day after his crucifixion. St. Raphael Church was filled to capacity. Some worshipers even stood in the Narthex. Photos by Jane Winstead
Saturday Vigil: The observance is the first celebration of the Eucharist during the Easter season. The Paschal candle is lighted from an Easter fire in front of the church. The candle symbolizes Christ as the light of the world and His presence in the midst of His people. Photos by Jane Winstead
Good Friday: The fast day solemnly commemorates the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death on the cross.Photos by Jane Winstead
Holy Thursday: The feast solemnly commemorates the institution of the Eucharist. It is the oldest of the Holy Week observances, and includes the Washing of the Feet, a ceremony that follows Jesus' example when he washed the feet of the Disciples after the Last Supper.Photos by Jane Winstead
Palm Sunday: The feast marks the triumphant entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Palms are distributed to parishioners at St. Raphael.
